Looking for a Japanese-English Bilingual Bookkeeper to join the Japanese Tax Practice of a leading U.S. CPA firm that provides accounting and tax services throughout the United States.
For candidates residing in Japan, employment will be arranged through an Employer of Record (EOR), allowing you to work primarily remotely from the Tokyo metropolitan area.
In this role, you will support Japanese corporate clients by handling a wide range of accounting responsibilities, including bookkeeping, payroll, month-end closing, financial statement preparation, and tax-related compliance work.
You will work closely with experienced Partners and Managers, providing an excellent opportunity to develop expertise in U.S. accounting and taxation. Depending on your performance and career goals, there may also be opportunities to advance into positions such as Tax Associate.
Job Summary
As a Bookkeeper in the Japanese Tax Practice, you will provide bookkeeping and accounting services for Japanese corporate clients.
Your responsibilities include AP/AR management, bank reconciliations, journal entries, month-end closing, payroll, tax compliance, and client communication.
This position is primarily remote; however, occasional in-person meetings in the Tokyo metropolitan area may be required for team meetings or client support.
Responsibilities
Bookkeeping & Monthly Accounting
- Manage Accounts Payable (AP) and Accounts Receivable (AR)
- Perform bank and credit card reconciliations
- Prepare journal entries and adjusting journal entries
- Perform balance sheet reconciliations
- Prepare monthly cash flow reports
- Prepare financial statements, including Profit & Loss Statements and Cash Flow Statements
- Prepare consolidated financial statements
- Perform intercompany reconciliations between Japanese parent companies and U.S. subsidiaries
Payroll
- Process payroll data
- Perform gross-up calculations
- Review and verify employee timesheets
- Process payroll using ADP or Paychex
Tax & Compliance
- Prepare Sales & Use Tax and Property Tax filings
- Prepare Forms 1096, 1099, and 1042
- File Annual Reports and SOS filings
- Renew Business Licenses and Registered Agent registrations
Client Support
- Respond to inquiries from Japanese corporate clients
- Communicate with vendors, banks, and clients
- Conduct business communications via email, phone, and online meetings in both Japanese and English
- Support additional projects assigned by Partners and Managers
Qualifications
- Business-level proficiency in Japanese and English
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or equivalent practical experience
- Bookkeeping experience
- Experience with AP, AR, and bank reconciliations
- Hands-on experience with QuickBooks
- Basic knowledge of Bill.com
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple clients accurately
- Detail-oriented with excellent accuracy
- Ability to attend occasional in-person meetings in the Tokyo metropolitan area when required
Preferred Qualifications
- Currently studying for the CPA Exam or having passed one or more CPA exam sections
- EA (Enrolled Agent) certification
- Experience working at a CPA firm, accounting firm, or tax firm
- Experience as a Staff Accountant
- Interest in U.S. accounting and taxation
- Desire to build a long-term career in accounting and tax
