Director(M&D Business Development) | Major Japanese Energy Company

A major Japanese energy company in Houston, Texas  is looking for a Director(M&D Business Development).

 

<Position Summary>
This role is expected to play a critical role in contributing to the company’s long-term growth
strategy. In the 2030s, the mid- and downstream business is expected to generate an incremental
USD 500 million in profit, and this position will be a key driver in achieving that objective
through the origination, execution, and management of large-scale investment opportunities.
This role will be responsible for the full investment lifecycle, including opportunity origination
through networking, investment evaluation, due diligence execution, transaction support, and
post-investment business management and governance.
The ideal candidate will have approximately 10 years of experience in energy infrastructure
investment or business development, including prior experience at private equity funds infrastructure
funds, or strategic investors, with a strong track record in gas and/or power infrastructure investments.

 

<Responsibilities>
Origination and Networking
・Develop and maintain strong relationships with private equity funds, infrastructure funds,
developers, operators, management teams, financial advisors, and lenders.
・Proactively source investment and partnership opportunities in gas midstream assets (pipelines,
gathering and processing, storage, LDC-related assets) and downstream or power-related
infrastructure (power generation, distributed energy, energy services, etc.).
Investment Evaluation and Transaction Execution
・Lead initial screening and commercial assessment of potential investment opportunities.
・Oversee financial modeling, valuation analysis, and investment structuring.
・Lead and coordinate due diligence processes, including commercial, financial, tax, legal,
regulatory, and technical diligence, working closely with internal teams and external advisors.
・Support transaction execution, negotiations, and internal investment approval processes.
Post-Investment Management and Governance
・Support post-investment value creation planning and execution.
・Monitor portfolio company performance, including financial results, KPIs, and strategic
initiatives.
・Participate in governance activities such as board representation or board observer roles.
・Maintain ongoing dialogue with portfolio company management teams and internal stakeholders
to ensure strategic alignment.
Internal Coordination and Strategy
・Collaborate closely with internal teams across strategy, finance, legal, and technical functions.
・Contribute to the development and refinement of mid- and downstream investment strategy.
・Support internal reporting and communication with senior management and headquarters.

 

<Required Qualifications>
・ Approximately 8 years of experience in energy infrastructure investment or business
development, with a strong focus on gas and/or power sectors.
・ Prior experience at private equity funds, infrastructure funds, strategic investors, or energy-
focused investment or development platforms.
・Demonstrated experience leading complex investment evaluations, due diligence processes,
and transaction execution.
・ Strong financial and commercial acumen, including valuation, project finance, and
investment analysis.
・ Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Economics, Business Administration, or a related field.
・ Business-level proficiency in English (written and verbal)
・ Strong networking and relationship-building capabilities.
・ Ability to independently drive complex transactions from origination through execution.
・Sound judgment balancing investment risk, return, and strategic fit.
・ Clear and effective communication with senior management, boards, and external partners.
・ Ability to operate both strategically and hands-on in a deal-driven environment

<Preferred Qualifications>
・ 10+ years of experience in energy infrastructure investment or business development, with a
strong focus on gas and/or power sectors.
・ Direct investment experience in U.S. gas midstream and/or power infrastructure assets.
・ Experience with long-term, capital-intensive infrastructure businesses.
・ Board-level or board observer experience at portfolio companies.
・ Experience working with cross-border stakeholders or global energy companies.
・ MBA, CFA, CPA, or other relevant professional or advanced degrees are preferred.
